In particular, two men and one woman were operated on a few years apart at the Arta hospital for gallstones by the same surgeon. A few days later they ended up due to complications and omissions as their relatives complain. “From the first day it basically started falling, the second it got worse, the third it got worse, at some point he was saying to me “it’s burning me, it’s burning me”. I went to look for the doctor who suddenly disappeared,” says the victim’s son. “After pressure, the situation arrived to take him to Ioannina. In Ioannina they did a third surgery on him, in which they told me that they couldn’t do anything, because the mistake was so big, they couldn’t fix it with anything… He died of septicemia,” said Babis Kitsos.
Yesterday, the Three-member Misdemeanor Court of Arta found the surgeon guilty of manslaughter due to medical errors and omissions and sentenced him to 22 months in prison. However, the fact that the doctor, despite the convictions, instead of resigning from his duties, got a promotion is a big surprise. “After the first incident, because my uncle was one of the three incidents, the Arta hospital promoted him to the director of the surgery clinic, which is an oxymoron,” emphasizes Irini Antoniou, niece of another victim.
In a telephone conversation that the Star television station had with the commander of the Arta hospital, the latter said that he cannot be responsible for the irrational promotion of the surgeon, as he does not have permission from the ministry. According to information, the Ministry of Health has requested the file of the cases, in order to answer all the questions.
