The funeral procession was attended by the president of PASOK-KINAL Nikos Androulakis, the Minister of Rural Development Lefteris Avgenakis and the Regional Governor of Crete Stavros Arnautakis
In an emotional atmosphere, Heraklion said goodbye to the former rector of the University of Crete, former MEP, author and university teacher, George Grammatikakis, who passed away at the age of 84.
The funeral service was held in the presence of officials and a large number of people at the Metropolitan Church of Agios Minas in Heraklion. The funeral procession was attended by the president of PASOK-KINAL, Nikos Androulakis, who in his remarks said: “Today we say goodbye to a great Cretan, a great intellectual, George Grammatikakis, who with his political and social presence, sealed the city’s recent history us. I was lucky enough to be MEPs together, for five whole years, and I met a man with kindness, with morals, with kindness. He was truly a jewel of our country in the European Parliament. I will always remember him as a man who wanted young people in the spotlight. But he too, was a new man in thinking, ideas, perceptions. My deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.”
The Minister of Rural Development and Food and Member of Parliament for Heraklion Lefteris Avgenakis emphasized: “Today we say goodbye to George Grammatikakis. Heraklion, Crete, Greece, is poorer. A fanatic Heraklion, a genuine Cretan, a man who loved science, like few others, is leaving us. A man who served letters in the best possible way. Heartfelt condolences to his family. We will remember him because he really contributed to society, he contributed to the country, he contributed to science.”
Moved, the regional governor of Crete, Stavros Arnautakis, expressed his condolences to the family of Giorgos Grammatikakis, stating that “Crete, Greece must always honor the memory of this great scientist, our rector”.
