Technological giant is accused of unknowingly recording their private conversations through audio aid
Two French lawyers filed a collective lawsuit in France against Apple for violating personal data by recording users’ conversations by Siri audio.
It was preceded by a similar lawsuit in the United States, which ended in early 2025 with the payment of compensation to the plaintiffs. “The idea consists of depositing (…) coordinated, joint ducts and we must be as much as possible to seek Apple compensation,” explains lawyer Zilian Bayu and calls on Apple device owners who have Siri in the last ten years to participate in the group education website.
In the United States, Apple accepted on January 2 to pay $ 95 million to US consumers who have accused her in 2019 of unknowingly recorded their private talks through Siri. The settlement agreement clarifies that Apple has refused and continues to deny any delinquency and responsibility.
Asked by AFP about French treatment, Apple referred to statements published in January with which the company assured that Siri “was designed to protect the privacy of users”. “Apple does not maintain sound recordings of the interaction with Siri, unless the user gives his explicit consent to improve Siri,” the company had said in January. If teamwork is aimed at compensation for French users, lawyer Zylian Bayu believes that similar procedures can also start in other European Union countries.
While in the United States the amount of compensation, which is still under discussion, can reach a few tens of dollars per person, the French lawyer hopes that European rules for protecting personal data (GDPR Data Protection Regulation, which offers more protection to users, will? allow a higher amount of compensation.
French teamwork, hoping to gather thousands of users, aims to determine the amount of compensation that corresponds to the price of the device or more, based on the profile of the plaintiff and the character of personal data, which is considered more sensitive whether it will be a physician or military.
In February, the Human Rights Association (Ligue des Droits de l’Homme) also filed a lawsuit against Apple in Paris to violate privacy by recording private conversations by Siri unknowingly.
