18.4% increase in tourists visiting Greece in the eight months of 2023

According to data from the Bank of Greece, tourist arrivals increased by 17.3% and revenues by 15.2% on an annual basis

The 18 billion euros approached the revenue from tourism in the nine months of January – September 2023, recording an increase of 15.2% compared to the corresponding period of 2022.

This development reflects the increase in the tourist flow to our country, as during this period the number of tourists who visited our country reached 27.8 million and was increased by 17.3% compared to last year. According to the data of the Bank of Greece, travel traffic through airports increased by 11.7%, while that through road border stations by 36.7%.

During the period under review, travel traffic from EU-27 countries amounted to 16.7 million travelers, showing an increase of 15% compared to the corresponding period in 2022, while travel traffic from non-EU-27 countries increased by 21.2% and amounted to 10.843 million travelers. Travel traffic from euro area countries increased by 10%, while travel traffic from EU-27 countries outside the euro area increased by 25.2%.

In particular, travel traffic from Germany increased by 6.5% and reached 3.8 million travelers, while that from France increased by 5.3% and reached 1.6 million travelers. With reference to countries outside the EU 27, travel traffic from the United Kingdom increased by 0.8% to 3,882.4 thousand travelers and that from the USA by 32.6% to 1,108.0 thousand travelers. Finally, travel traffic from Russia decreased by 3.8% and amounted to 30.1 thousand travelers.

Regarding the distribution of revenues, receipts from residents of the EU-27 countries increased by 11.7%, and amounted to 9.9 billion euros, as well as receipts from residents of countries outside the EU-27 by 18 .3%, which amounted to 7.5 billion euros.

In more detail, the collections from residents of the euro zone countries amounted to 8 billion. euros, increased by 12.0%, while receipts from residents of the EU-27 countries outside the euro zone showed an increase of 10.5% and amounted to 2 billion euros. In particular, receipts from Germany increased by 4.4% to 3 billion euros, while receipts from France increased by 10.6% to 1.3 billion euros. From the countries outside the EU-27, receipts from the United Kingdom rose by 6.8%, reaching €3 billion. Receipts from the USA increased by 13.5% and amounted to 1.11 billion. euros, while those from Russia decreased by 23.8% and amounted to 28.0 million euros.
