The Google Doodles, as stated in a Google briefing note, they are creative, interactive, and yet informative little works of art that appear to celebrate everything from the most well-known holidays to the most important figures in modern history. For many years now we’ve seen them in place of the usual search engine logo and it’s one of Google’s ways of turning the ordinary into something different and special, making even the simplest search a little more magical.
As part of the celebration of its fifteen-year journey Google in GreeceGoogle has selected and presents 15 of the most important “Greek” Doodles published from 2004 until today, it was pointed out in APE BEE.
2004 Olympic Games: From the first series of Google Doodles, dedicated to Greece, which commemorated the Opening and Closing ceremonies, as well as a multitude of sports of the 28th Olympiad in 2004 held in Athens.
Philopoimin Fino’s birthday: Philopoimin Finos was one of the most important personalities of Greek cinema. Google celebrated his birth anniversary with a special Doodle released on September 1, 2008.
Opening of the Acropolis Museum: A major project for Athens and Greece, the new Acropolis Museum, officially opened on June 20, 2009, with Google marking the date with a Doodle.
2500 Years since Marathon: 2500 years after the feat of Pheidippides who ran the Marathon-Athens route to shout the famous “Nenikikamen” at the finish line, Google commemorated the historic battle of Marathon and the Marathon race, now considered one of the most important sporting events in the world .
77 Years since the Birth of Theodoros Angelopoulos: In January 2012, Thodoros Angelopoulos, one of the most important Greek filmmakers, passed away. On April 27, 2012, he would have celebrated his 77th birthday. Google chose to honor him with a Doodle dedicated to his art.
101 Years since the Birth of Odysseus Elytis: The Nobel laureate Odysseus Elytis remains to this day one of the most influential poets of Greece. On November 2, 2012 Google published an excellent Doodle in honor of a great man whose work continues to inspire younger generations.
The Doodle that won the Doodle 4 Google contest in Greece: In May 2013, a unique Doodle was published – the work of a Greek student who came first in Doodle 4 Google. It is an annual competition organized by Google in various countries, with the aim of encouraging students aged 6 to 18 to create a Doodle that will appear for one day on the local Google homepage.
105 Years since the Birth of Karolos Kuhn: Modern Greek theater would not be what we know without Karolos Koon. The Art Theater founder would have celebrated his 105th birthday on September 13, 2013, with Google publishing a special Doodle honoring him and his work.
90 Years since the Birth of Maria Callas: The world-renowned soprano Maria Callas would have turned 90 on December 2, 2013. Google published a special Doodle in honor of the great Greek woman on her birthday.
216 years since the Birth of Dionysios Solomos: An inspiring Doodle in honor of the National Poet of Greece and creator of its National Anthem, Dionysios Solomos, was presented by Google 216 years after his birth, on April 8, 2014.
95 years since the Birth of Melina Mercouri: Known for her acting talent, but also her contribution to Culture, Melina Merkouri was one of the brightest stars of Greece. As the first female Minister of Culture, she invested in the creation of libraries, the preservation of Greek archaeological sites and the establishment of the European Capital of Culture institution, while leading the campaign for the return of the Greek marbles of the Parthenon. On October 18, 2015, she would have celebrated her 95th birthday.
120th Anniversary of the Birth of the Modern Olympic Games: The modern Olympic Games began in 1896 in Athens, at the Panathenaic Stadium. It was a particularly important event, which included 9 sports and 43 events. The most important sporting event was the Marathon, which also gave birth to the legend of Spyros Louis, the first Greek Olympian, who was honored by Google in one of the four different Doodles it published that day.
Conquering the Peak of Olympus: According to Greek mythology, the abode of the gods is at the top of Mount Olympus. On August 2, 1913, Frédéric Boissonnas, Daniel Baud-Bovy and Christos Kakkalos were the first to reach the top of the mountain, and Google honored their feat with a Doodle published on the anniversary in 2018.
82 Years since the Birth of Michalis Dertouzou: With an original Doodle, Google honored the Greek-born computer scientist Michalis Dertouzos, who predicted how the Internet would affect the life and everyday life of humanity, “guessed” the popularity of personal computers and contributed to maximizing their potential, as director of Massachusetts Institute of Technology Laboratory for Computer Science.
National Independence Day 2023: Every year Google honors Greece’s independence struggle with a special Doodle. So again this year, Google Search welcomed all Greek users with the Greek flag flying proudly.
