The defendant’s marathon apology lasted nine days
“Time for justice to speak” about her case Roulas Pispirigou arrived, according to the prosecutor of the Joint Jury who shortly before 10:00 in the morning began her trial on the guilt or not of the accused in the murder of her first-born daughter, Georgina.
The prosecutor, Evangelia Spyridonidou, addressing the judgeshe said: “It is time for the judiciary to speak about this case, because so far only the other experts or non-specialists have spoken”, he said characteristically, noting that the specific trial does not have difficult legal issues, but medical ones, while he also referred to the characterization of it as an “iconic trial” that has been given to it. “I don’t know why that characterization, just maybe because it involved the life of her 8-year-old daughter,” he said, pointing out that “what will lead us to strengthen the presumption of innocence or overturn it is what is heard here. The main concern is the proof of the essential truth”.
It took 89 meetings, the statements of about 60 witnesses, a lot of evidence and the defendant’s marathon plea that lasted nine days, for the time of the prosecutor to come who referred in detail to the events that took place based on what was heard in court, while referring to the testimony of Manos Daskalakis she said that the couple had a smooth life with ups and downs. “Mr. Daskalakis characterized the accused as a perfect mother and indeed that she took care of Georgina after the encephalopathy. They had many periods of estrangement, moving away and returning from the family home.”
The prosecutor referred to the births of all three children of the family, but also to their deaths and to the couple’s episodic relationship.
Referring to the admission of Georgina to the Karamandane Hospital on April 8, 2021 due to cracks – as the defendant claims – two days after Roula Pispirigou declared that she did not want to return home and locked herself in a hotel, telling her sister to give the child to her husband, the prosecutor stated that “this is an incident of stabbings that is disproved by the child’s clinical picture. The clinical examination was flawless on April 8th. This is the most important element. At the hospital he knew the family’s history and they wanted him to be fully examined.”
The prosecutor’s office maintained that there was no damage to the child’s heart according to her tests. “Georgina had a simple murmur, she was thoroughly examined. At that point in time, she did not show any problems with her heart, with normal tests”, he emphasized, and added: “The discharge is announced and immediately the accused told them that the child was vomiting. The doctors canceled the discharge and kept it for further examination.”
