Evaneos cites the effects on the quality of services provided to tourists by overtourism on the two Greek islands
The first samples of the effects of the rhetoric of “hyper-tourism” are now real, as the tourism platform Evaneos, which, as stated on its website, cooperates with 2,000 local agents and organizes 8,000 tours to the individual requirements of travelers (Tailor Made Tours), has decided to excluding Santorini and Mykonos from its range of activities in 2025.
Cause as stated by santonews.comwas a study, which he prepared in collaboration with the Roland Berger management consulting company, regarding the pressure of some destinations from tourist flows. According to what was published, the structure of the research concerned:
To measure the level of risk from hypertourism, each destination is rated on a scale from 1 (low risk) to 5 (extreme risk) combining four objective criteria:
1. International travelers per capita
2. International travelers per km2
3. Seasonal gathering
4. Level of sustainability maturity (this evaluation criterion takes into account, among others, the social impact of tourism, the state of the host infrastructure or the development of transport).
The grading brings Greece to 4.2 points, i.e. to be in the “red”. But in the findings made public, it is stated that “there is a situation, which is particularly evident in Mykonos and Santorini: The massive influx of tourists affects the quality of life of the local population and therefore ignites their anger. The consequences are multiple: Price inflation, overcrowded roads, difficulties in water supply, which in turn also worsen the traveller’s experience” the platform points out.
“Although Greece is one of the best-selling destinations on the platform, from January 2025 Evaneos will no longer offer Mykonos and Santorini for the summer season, until further notice,” he concludes.
